Giovanni Battista Tiepolo
The Apotheosis of St Gaetano Thiene

1757
Oil on canvas
Church of Santa Maria Maddalena
Rampazzo, Camisano Vicentino, Italy

The saint is pictured in the high-collared cassock customary in his order. In many of his images he wears a gold stole over a white surplice. The lily stalk in the lower right, a traditional emblem of sexual purity, is a common feature of his portraits.
